Tech Mahindra To Use Blockchain Technology

To comply with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)’s regulations to give protection to mobile phone subscribers from Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) or spam calls by leveraging the power of blockchain, Indian technology firm Tech Mahindra announced that it will be implementing an anti-spam call solution powered by blockchain. Rajesh Dhuddu, Global Practice Leader- Blockchain, Tech Mahindra said the solution is in line with the regulations that will kick in from the last week of May.

He further added, “the solution aims at mitigating the issue of spam calls.” In 2018, Tech Mahindra had designed the Blockchain solution, in compliance with the regulations and guidelines of TRAI and the company along with Microsoft demonstrated to the regulator the proof of concept of this solution, which is meant to enable telecom providers in preventing unauthorised access of their subscribers’ data. Rajesh Dhuddu also said that the TRAI regulations will affect 800 million subscribers.

Rajesh said,

“At Tech Mahindra, we are betting big on Blockchain as part of our TechMNxt charter (global programme rolled out to explore emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, and Cybersecurity among others), to deliver tangible business value and empower our customers to provide a completely differentiated experience to their end customers.”

The company is also demonstrating Blockchain capabilities in various sectors counting Telecom, Manufacturing, Hi-Tech Industries, and Financial Services.

The solution prepared to protect people from spam calls, uses Blockchain tech to save and share a user’s incoming contact settings, i.e. who they have consented to receive communications from. Tech Mahindra says they give proof of concept for this solution, in conjunction with Microsoft, to TRAI back in 2018.

As reported before, Tech Mahindra is now working with tech giant Samsung to execute solutions with the latter’s blockchain platform Nexledger. The arrangement enables Samsung to grow its international blockchain opportunities and for Tech Mahindra to expand its blockchain operations in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tech Mahindra’s blockchain-based system for spam calls?
+
It’s a permissioned blockchain network where telecom operators and regulators record user consent and communication templates. This shared ledger ensures that only approved, traceable messages reach subscribers, reducing spam.
Who participates in this solution?
+
The system involves telecom operators, telemarketing companies, regulators, and messaging platforms. Each participant can register consents, message formats, and complaints on the blockchain, enabling transparent oversight.
How does this system stop spam calls effectively?
+
Since only pre-approved message formats and consent details are recorded, unauthorized or new messaging attempts are automatically blocked. Any attempt to send messages without proper registration is easily detected and rejected.
What user impact does this solution have?
+
Subscribers experience fewer spam calls and messages because only vetted communications reach them. They also have confidence that misuse can be traced and addressed promptly.
What challenges does this approach face?
+
Adopting the solution requires coordination among multiple telecom providers, integration with legacy systems, secure handling of private keys, and safeguards to protect subscriber privacy on a public yet permissioned network.
